In October 2002 extremists involved in the radical Jemaah Islamiya Network staged a terrorist attack in Bali, Indonesia. The world was devastated by the incident and shocked that it was launched against innocent civilians. The Bali Bombings were a global tragedy, but they were particularly distressing for the people of Australia.
Australians were specifically targeted in the attack and the majority of the victims came from this small but close knit country. We listened horrified to the body count and the numbers of the injured as they climbed and climbed.
We watched devastated as news reports showed us families and friends searching for lost loved ones. And we cried together when we heard how victims who had survived the bombings died in transport or in Australian and Indonesian hospitals.
The Bali Bombings and the stories of tragedy were devastating for a country that had never before lost so many young lives in one occurrence.
During the years that followed the disaster we had to ask ourselves how such a heart-breaking and evil event could transpire so close to home. But perhaps we have heard enough about the terrorists and it’s time we focused on the unsung hero’s of that terrible night in history.

Heroes 2002 recounts these stories but it also takes us through the events that took place after the bombings.
The story shows us the extraordinary resourcefulness and dedication that was displayed by the Operation Alliance Task-force. And how police officers from different countries were able to come together and eventually arrest the perpetrators of this heinous terrorist attack.
Heroes 2002 does not center on the terrorist’s that committed this crime instead it attempts to convey the commitment of the police officers who tracked down and eventually arrested them.
Heroes 2002 does not dwell on the on the terrible sadness that this terrorist attack caused it focuses on the bravery average people displayed when they were faced with a deadly and life threatening situation.
