American inmate Frank Amado has been moved to Nusa Kambangan, Indonesia’s so called ‘Execution Island’ in what could signal another round of executions in Indonesia.
The media in Indonesia are also reporting that a further six inmates stationed in prisons across the country will soon be transferred to the island to join Amado.
Frank Amado was arrested on October 19, 2009 outside his apartment in Jakarta by the Indonesian drug enforcement agency known as BNN. He was then found to be in possession 5.668 grams of Shabu-Shabu, (crystal Meth) which he had been storing in his home.
Amado was offered little sympathy and no help from the U.S. Embassy in Jakarta and he later admitted to his crime and was sentenced to death on August 4, 2010.
If the punishment is carried out, Frank Amado would be the first U.S Citizen to be executed under Indonesia’s strict drug laws. The execution would also coincide with a planned visit to Indonesia by the United States Vice President Mike Pence.
The Indonesian government prefers to keep a low profile when it comes to the execution of prisoners for drug smuggling, however, when inmates are transferred to Nusa Kambangan it usually signals the worst.
Indonesia’s penal system has carried out three rounds of executions on Execution Island with the last occurring in July 2016. Death-sentenced inmates are executed by firing squad and the inmate is given 72 hours’ notice that the punishment is about to take place.
Despite protests from foreign governments Indonesia executed 12 inmates over drug-related charges in 2015 including two Australians. Then in July 2016 a further three were executed with ten others slated for the punishment receiving extremely rare and unexplained remissions.
The notorious high-security prison Nusa Kambangan is located in the Indian Ocean and it is separated by a narrow strait off the southern coast of Java, (Nusa means island in Bhasa Indonesian).
Known by locals as Pulau Hantu or ‘Ghost Island’ Indonesia’s Alcatraz once had snakes, mainly cobras, spread around its thick jungle area’s to deter inmates from trying to escape.
